As the pandemic drags on into the new year, a lot of folks are looking for creative activities to pass the time at home. While card games and board games are great, sometimes you want something more mellow—that’s where jigsaw puzzles come in. Chances are, you’ve done a jigsaw puzzle of some kind at some point in your life. But if you haven’t put together a puzzle as an adult, you might not realize how well it pairs with cannabis! And as an added bonus, you can frame the finished puzzle and use it to decorate your home or gift it to someone else!
I recently made an impulse buy when I found a 500-piece puzzle of “The Big Lebowski” for just $10. It had been a decade or two since the last time I had put a puzzle together. My partner and I set up a small table in a spot safe from our cats, knowing this project might take several sessions to complete.
Step 1: Sorting the pieces. The first task when starting a puzzle is sorting the pieces–the perfect task for while you’re stoned! We found it was easiest to pull all the edge pieces and start building the puzzle with those, and to sort the middle pieces by color and/or texture. We enjoyed Vortex by Bondi during the sorting process.
Step 2: Assembling the puzzle. If you’re planning to frame the finished puzzle, make sure to assemble it on a smooth surface, like a piece of cardboard or poster board. It will be much easier to do the gluing and framing if the puzzle is on a separate surface, rather than directly on a tabletop! It took us 3 nights to finish the puzzle. Even when there was a long period of time without any puzzle pieces being placed, we didn’t mind–after all, we were spending time together, doing something new, and smoking lots of cannabis! Some of the strains we consumed during this process were: Peach Rings by Puget Power, Do-Si-Do by Bondi, and and Rose by Loud.
Step 3: Gluing. After we finished the puzzle, we used a paintbrush to apply a thin coat of adhesive. There’s a few different options that you can use–we just happened to have some Mod Podge around the house, so we used that. Depending on what kind of adhesive you use, you may want to do two or more coats, letting each coat dry completely before applying the next.
Step 4: Framing. From here, you just need to transfer the (completely dried) puzzle onto whatever matting you’re going to use for framing. If you’re skipping the frame, you can just glue the puzzle to a piece of thick cardboard or something similar.
Today I woke up inspired. Maybe it was the Christmas gift I
received from my brother, maybe it was the sativa I blazed up pre breakfast.
Hell maybe it was a combo of the two. Either way lets get this shit going.
I was gifted an immersion circulator a.k.a. a sous vide
Most cooking aficionados might start dreaming of the
magnificent steaks and fancy infused chicken or salmon meals in their future,
and ill get there eventually.
In the meantime lets make some chef quality cannabis butter.
In my opinion you should never use good smoke-able weed for
edibles. So lets reach past the premium, towards some of that outdoor from last
summer. I’m going to use a combo
of some stem-ridden buds and other bags that I have laying around that I know I
wouldn’t enjoy if I were to smoke. We’ll even switch to a step-by-step cookbook
recipe style format as we dive into Tacoma House of Cannabis’ very own official
Sous Vide Cannabutter.
¼ to ½ oz. of your not so dankest buds
Varying amount of water
1 lb. of unsalted butter
Appropriate sized jar with lid
Fill up large pot with warm water, attach immersion
circulator and preheat water to 185 degrees Fahrenheit.
Lets get our desired amount of dried out buds and add them
to the blender. For this batch I will be using roughly a ½ oz. (maybe a little
more) of some stuff I got laying around. If you want extra potent cannabutter
use a little more, if you are worried about battling a face melting edible high
use a ¼ oz. or less. Put dry herb into blender and add water on top. If weed is
extremely dry and soaks up water add more water. Blend up marijuana and water
mixture. Make sure to not over blend or pulverize product in blender, you want
a nice course grind.
Chop up butter into squares set aside. Take blended water
and weed mixture and empty from blender into appropriate sized jar. Jar should
have enough room to fit butter and blended mixture with spare room. Put 1 lb.
cubed butter into jar and seal
Place sealed jar in 185 degree preheated water bath. Let
immersion circulator run its process for at least 6 hours. You will have a
separated oil and cannabis product sitting on top of water in sealed jar.
Strain water/marijuana/butter mixture through several layers
of cheesecloth into another jar or container of equal size. Squeeze out
remaining product in cheesecloth and Set strained mixture into refrigerator
You will be left over with a hardened infused butter floated on top of water. Discard water underneath hardened butter. Enjoy by substituting infused butter instead of butter or oil in your favorite baked treat!
One of my favorite nostalgia moments when hitting the mountain is when you’re on the chairlift and you get that first intake of a dank smell from other mountain shredders getting their ganja on in the clean alpine air. Of course that usually makes one yearn to have a little smoke session of ones own, and hopefully the cycle repeats.
The numero uno, unrivaled feeling I have had on the mountain is having said toke session and then cruising some untouched, fresh powder lines through various tree runs or trails, capped off by sticking some gnarly little cliff jump. And to share that with a group of friends or family is my personal ultimate good time whilst cruising the slopes.
The issue of not being able to consume cannabis as openly as tobacco or beer and alcohol is still 100% real and at the mountain you have to be especially weary of this. Personally I’ve never let that slow down my consumption and I’m gonna key y’all in on some pro-tips I’ve picked up over the years to efficiently and safely have a cannabis filled day on the mountain.
#1 Doob tubes.
When you’re at the store stocking up make sure you get some pre rolls that come in joint tubes. Or if you roll your own, save them from previous purchases, you can always reuse those things. The little plastic or glass tubes pre-rolls come in have saved me much heartache over the years whilst on my more physical adventures. The doob tubes are handy because they are not bulky and they keep the joints in pristine shape until they are ready to be blazed.
#2 Mindful of where you blaze
I know weed is legal yada yada, you ain’t gotta tell me, I am the furthest thing from a closet smoker. Although, when on the slopes its important to not push the envelope. Cannabis consumption on the mountain should still be done in a discreet fashion. Don’t smoke on the chairlift unless you got the mountain to yourself and even then be careful you could get in trouble from a not so cool lifty and get your pass taken. I always urge peeps to find the trees, have a pow wow, its always a good time and sometimes a needed break. For the extremely initiated, pack the dab rig in the car depending on where were skiing you might have access to stop in throughout the day. Or hit it in the A.M. and let it chill in the whip until your ready to head home. Do yourself a favor and dump the water out in between uses. There is nothing worse than a bong or dab rig impeded by frozen water.
#3 Carry a Pack
Carry a pack of joints, carry a pack of edibles, hell, carry a pack of blunts if that’s your thing. Whenever I’m on the mountain and trying to consume these things its always smart to stash them in an easy to grab spot. Whether that’s in my snow jacket or my bibs, its key to have easy access to the danks and a lighter! Personally I don’t like carrying a backpack, but lots of my friends have in the past and it works for them. If carrying a backpack, stash it with all the essentials plus some water or snacks to guarantee your endurance on the slopes.
#4 Be Responsible
Charge your vape pens, pack a couple lighters, you know, plan for the day. Nothing worse than needing something that you don’t have and being stuck without it on shred day. That goes for the non paraphernalia items as well. Pack a multi tool, extra pair of goggles/gloves/ change of clothes. I don’t know how many times I’ve been blessed by someone bringing something that I forgot or vice versa. Preparation is always key to a good time. And now for probably the most important thing to remember, pack in what you pack out. Leave your smoke spot cleaner than what you left it and ready for the next set of shredders to do the same.
How many of ya’ll out there blaze it up before hitting the gym? My people. Hell, maybe your a little less initiated and you dabble in using cannabis edibles or topicals as your post workout routine for relief. Wherever you fall on our little spectrum, you my friends, are the latest trend.
According to results from a research survey published by Frontiers in Public Health, cannabis use and fitness is on the rise in legal states.
605 people took the survey. The survey targeted people 21 years and older in recreational marijuana states who had liked some sort of cannabis page via facebook. In the full sample, 494 participants (81.7%) endorsed using cannabis before and/or after exercise and 111 (18.3%) did not.
I had the chance to chit chat with a couple that frequents our store as well as our very own Tacoma Center YMCA. For anonymity sake we’ll call them Jay and Nay.
“When I smoke before playing basketball it puts me in a different zone, I get more focused in on the game and have more fun.” Jay said.
“I like to smoke sativa before going to the gym normally, but lately I’ve been on a fruit chew kick,” said Nay. “It seems like it helps so I can lift more and ride the spin bikes longer.”
Nay says that she prefers our Ceres brand Fruit Chews to some other types of edibles on the market. They don’t leave a bad taste in her mouth or make her more thirsty, so its a good product to use before the gym.
For all of those post workout aches and pains without the consumption Ceres has some of the most desirable products on the market available for topicals. The Dragon Balm by Ceres is easily our most popular topical product on the shelf. And you can get it out the door for $15.
I always compare Dragon Balm to the famous Tiger Balm in smell and consistency. Pro-Tip, its better, cause its jam packed with cannabis! Dragon Balm has a broad spectrum of cannabinoids and terpenes as well as camphor oil and menthol essential oils. As i stated last week, different ratio’s of cannabinoids can be more beneficial for various ailments, and everyone is different so its always helpful to come in and explain what you’re looking for to our staff. Dragon Balm has 175mg THC, 175 mg CBD, and 20 mg CBN.
Topicals such as this will only provide relief and never a psychoactive effect. So don’t you worry you wont get high from this stuff.
Whether you are using marijuana to push your personal limits at the gym, or to cope with the healing and relief process. We pride ourselves at The House of Cannabis in carrying a product to fit every one of your cannabis needs, so come on down and chat it up with our knowledgeable staff and we’ll get you stocked for your next workout session.
Going to the beach in the fall is just as good as the summer if you ask me. The key to a successful fall beach trip is picking the right time to go for optimal fun and adventure.
My friends, the time is now! According to a little birdie on my radio this morning The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife opened up season for razor clam digging today and the clams are plentiful. So far, the season opened today October 26th and it lasts for seven days.
All the official information that you may need regarding razor clam digging can be found at Washington’s Department of Fish and Wild Life website at https://wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/shellfishing-regulations/razor-clams#current. I Highly suggest checking out their website for licensing and harvesting information, current and future dig dates, and which beaches are open for digging.
For the official stoner guide to razor clamming step no further, I got you covered.
First and foremost we gotta get our stash right before heading out. When doing outdoor activities like fishing and crabbing I gotta have me some joints stashed to help pass the time while facing the elements. For the particular activity of razor clamming you are usually busy hunting for the clams to show you where they are in the sand, then when you finally see one you gotta dig that sucker up asap. This equates to less time to shoot the shit and smoke joints.
You guys, its all good! We have some of the best edibles on the market at Tacoma House of Cannabis, perfect to keep the buzz going on your busier activities, and they’re extremely affordable at that. Edibles starting out at $15 for 100mg of THC. Pop a few of those bad boys and you’ll be good til at least one limits worth of clams are harvested.
So we got our favorite edibles maybe a vaporizer for discreetness, and of course some joints stashed. All the rest of the things you need for razor clam digging can be found at the hardware stores near the beach; things like shellfish license, a digging utensil, and mesh bag for the bounty are a must.
It’s gonna be wet and cold out there in all reality. All that digging is gonna work up an appetite for some doobie breaks. So just remember to be respectful to others, and take a step back from the crowd before puffing on the magic dragon.
Ski or snowboard, it doesn’t matter — the season is right
around the corner, and Cliff Mass thinks we are going to have a wet and wild
winter! Avid borders are getting their Subarus, VWs, and Audis up for multiple
trips up the mountain. If you don’t have your own gear, and helicopter, getting
to some of the more desirable, dangerous, and exhilarating spots is difficult;
go to the touristy, more expensive spots is an arduous journey in crowds, high
costs, and long lines at the lifts can really put a damper on the spirit. If
only someone put out a guide of a couple awesome spots with no lines and
awesome runs, where to stay on the cheap, where to eat, and of course – where
to grab some pot.
The Seattle metro area has a habit of going to three places to ski – Crystal Mountain, Snoqualmie Summit, and Mount Baker Ski Area where the prices are steep, and the lift lines can be daunting on those perfect days on the weekend. So, one might wonder how to get a fulfilling and reasonably priced ski adventure in without heading to California, Montana, Colorado, or Wyoming. House of Cannabis has you covered in so many ways. For those of you in our loyal, loving Tacoma crowd, you may never have been to our ‘East of the mountains’ stores. Both are wonderful, fabulous cannabis stores in small towns buoyed by the recreational atmosphere of Okanogan County. There are also at opposite sides of the county, so the landscape and to do list can be varied and wide. For the price of a day at Crystal, Summit, or Baker, you can stay and ski the weekend in Okanogan County. I shall elaborate.
The second store we opened has become House of Cannabis – Twisp, in the Methow Valley. It is the closest store to Lake Chelan, and it is right on the Loup Loup Hwy 20 / Hwy 2 Scenic byway. Twisp offers several affordable, clean places to stay, including the Sportsman Motel ($, Rustic, Clean), Idle-a-While Motel ($, Cute, Quaint, Private), Twisp Terrace Lodge ($$, Modern, away from town), Twisp River Suites ($$$, Modern, walk the town), and even the uber ritzy Sun Mountain Lodge ($$$$, in Winthrop 8 miles North, mountain bike / horseback / cross country ski paradise). There are many other options as well that a simple google search will reveal – Abby Creek Inn, Mt Gardner Inn, and these AirBNBs. BUT WHAT ABOUT THE SKIING??
Loup Loup. Yeah, it’s a funny name, but it’s what it has. About 10 miles east from Twisp on Highway 20 is the summit of Loup Loup pass. A couple hundred yards after the summit is the turn to the left of the Loup Loup Ski Bowl, which is well marked. The road is well maintained, oft plowed, but you should have an AWD vehicle and/or chains or the appropriate fitting for your vehicle just in case conditions change while on the mountain. Two different lifts and a tow rope introduce you to varying levels of slopes available for your shredding desires. 1,240 vertical feet of skiing starting at the summit at 5,260 feet awaits you, with little to no lift line, and the highest single day pass starting at $55 each. Ski rentals are available in the towns of Winthrop, Twisp, and at the base of the Loup Loup ski bowl, so if you don’t have your own equipment, that’s ok!
The ski bowl has several long, enjoyable beginner and intermediate slopes, and many short and medium run expert slopes, with a skill level and ability to work on form with a variety of hill challenges. Loup Loup also has a tubing hill, and 23km of groomed cross country skiing available. Of course, House of Cannabis is there for you, just down in the town of Twisp, for all your cannabis needs during your stay. Check out the pics below for a current view of the mountain from their webcam, the ski map, and a pic of our fabulous store in Twisp. Continue past the pictures to read up on the Sitzmark ski area near House of Cannabis, in Tonasket.
Just 35 miles past Twisp, to the east, is our 3rd store, House of Cannabis – Tonasket. Aside from being an absolute gem inside its’ central location in the town, the interior is amazingly crafted through the vision of our partnership. Like Twisp, there are several great places to stay like the Red Apple Inn ($), Omak Inn ($$), The Junction ($), and many AirBNB and small resort style stays.
As for the hill, Sitzmark is ideal for families, or those
just learning to ski. Base elevation is just over 4300 feet, and the summit is
4950 feet. Sitzmark has two lifts (one of them is decidedly the main, and most
trafficked lift) serving the mountain. One of the things I really like about
Sitzmark is positioning of the runs, relative to the main lift. The three
expert runs are immediately under and to the sides of the main left, while beginners
and intermediates after unloading from the chair will ski to the left quite a
bit before beginning their runs. Expert skiers can expect to make frequent runs
during a day, maximizing on slope time because of quick access at the top to
the black diamond slopes, and at the bottom to the queue for the lift. Beginners
and Intermediates will enjoy the long runs back to the base down a variety of
green or blue rated slopes. Lift rates are a bit more value driven at Sitzmark,
compared to Loup Loup, with the basic adult pass clocking in at $45 for a full
After your day on the hill is done, there are lots of dining
options in the Twisp/Winthrop area until about 8-9pm on weekdays, and as late
as 11pm on weekends. In Tonasket, there are several options but the town closes
down a bit earlier, but for the night owls, Omak is 20 miles to the south, and
features great dining into the night, and also has 12 Tribes Casino on the
south side of town.

Every once in a while I like to practice my stoner habits in your classic stereotypical ways, and hey that’s just fine man. With that in mind, one of the go-to low-key activities is kickin’ back, getting nice and stoney, and taking in some cinematic culture. Whether it be a date night with the significant other, the K-9 companion, or even solo-dolo, cannabis and movie consumption for me, goes hand in hand.
The girlfriend and I have our routine down pat on how to approach
movie night, varying a little of course whether were staying in or hitting the
theater. Lately our recipe for the perfect stoney movie night has been the sum
of 1-part infused drink and 1-part doobie or blunt.
If our movie night is destined for the theater, we would most
definitely be practicing safe and legal consumption and would never advise
against. Our version of safe consumption just might include passing the infused
drink back and forth while blazing our pre movie doobie in the parking lot, but
hey each to their own.
The infused marijuana drink must be one of my favorite additions to the marijuana industry since legalization. In my opinion, the infused liquids hit your system much faster than infused edibles or activated concentrates. Whenever I split a 75-100 mg infused drink the high sneaks up on me within 45 minutes of consuming the thing. The infused drink high will last anywhere from one to another two hours after it starts kicking in, making it the perfect addition to any movie night. My favorite infused drinks that we have in stock now and for the foreseeable future are Wild Side by Green Revolution and Ray’s Lemonade by Dogtown Pioneers.
The infused drink takes 45 minutes to kick in?!? Have no worries, that’s what the doobie’s for. Lately my favorite infused pre-roll has actually been that of the blunt persuasion. Sensi Organix’s Blunt Royale line makes wood tipped, hemp wrapped blunts that come in one and two gram varieties.
Hardest decisions I’ve made in a while was narrowing down my
favorite stoner movies to create a little list for ya’ll. One through four were
easy, these will probably always be my top four stoner flics, unless somebody super
epic from the stoner community makes a cinematic masterpiece, until then, they
are set in stone.
Holy smokes though man the number five slot was hard to
narrow down. Some titles that just quite didn’t make the cut, but I feel I must
list anyway: Harold and Kumar, Cheech and Chong, Jay and Silent Bob, Grandma’s
Boy, the almost contender list could go on and on.
But alas, my top five stoner movie list. If you hadn’t seen any
of them, go ahead and crawl out from the rock you’ve been under for the last 20
years and thank me later, I just made you plans for the night.
Legal, recreational marijuana brings all types of consumers
out of the woodworks. I get the pleasure of serving weed to a vast variety of
people, some more entertaining than others.
No joke, some days it seems like Dave Chappelle scripted our
consumers straight out of his movie, Half-Baked, when he montages all the
different types of stoners they sell to. One demographic of consumer that is
always fun to sell to is the guy or gal looking to spice it up in the bedroom. We’re
going to call them the ‘aphrodisiac stoner,’ if I were to try to fit the Half-Baked
‘different types of stoner’ mold.
We got some fresh drops this week, one strain specifically standing
out for that aphrodisiac stoner. Mt. Baker Gardens (M.B.G.) grows a strain
called Candyland which may be just the thing for all those individuals looking
to get high and hot and heavy. M.B.G. brought us three strains Candyland, Lemon
Sorbet Birthday Cake, and Sin Mint Cookies.
If you’re asking me, the Candyland takes the cake (and the
cookies). The look of the Candyland buds are immaculate. Coated in crystals and
trichomes, with hints of a beautiful purple and light green variegated throughout
the jar, Candyland is a cross between Granddaddy Purple and Platinum Girl Scout
Most growers and weed heads alike call Candyland a strong sativa
with the classic happy, euphoric, and energetic type of high to go along with
the sweet, earthy, and citrus-y flavors and smells. I have heard from many
different strain reviews, read ups, and consumer feedback that Granddaddy Purple
can be the source of the arousal part of the high. The beauty of M.B.G.’s
Candyland is the energetic/happy effect that goes right along with it.
So you heard it first here folks. We got the stuff to get
the birds singing and the bees buzzing, just ask for M.B.G.’s Candyland.
Reminiscing of past Hempfests… always such a stoned memory. Our Seattle Hempfest weekends usually started in Bremerton. My friends and I would congregate for the free ferry ride to Seattle where we would roll joints in the bathroom to gear up for the brutal walk North. Once we landed in Seattle if we weren’t feeling bougee enough to flag down a bike cart we would get to stepping quickly so we could start sparking those freshly rolled joints in the safety of the Hempfest gates.
Before a recreational market was established in Washington my friends and I would always be super excited to accumulate edibles from various sources at Hempfest. Once a year we would have access to all these awesome new stoners that we would never get access to in our hometown little stoner circles. My strategy was always to seek out the hippiest looking grandmas because they would never disappoint when it came to dank ass edibles. Boy did I bite off more than I could chew one or two times, lets just thank god for the massive amount of food vendors that are available for us at the Munchie Market. Nowadays it’s very easy to get your hands on tasty baked goods or any type of edible with recreational stores scattered everywhere, my friends, we’re spoiled compared to how it used to be.
The more I think about it, Hempfest is like a weed smoker’s version of comic-con, it has everything, and anything weed related legally available, except for marijuana. So be smart; bring some doobies, blunts, vape pens, edibles, whatever your heart desires just practice good safe consumption habits, partake once you get inside the gates. Don’t forget to bring a little extra cash to avoid getting slaughtered by the ATM fee’s and lines. One more tip, you’re allowed to bring your own water through the gates. We all know what its like to get caught with some brutal cotton mouth on a dazed August day, so do yourself a favor and bring that thirst quencher.
Stay tuned as we amp up for Hempfest as we will be running
some in store sales to gear you up for the festivities. More to come on that as
we approach our holy weekend.
Hempfest is August 16-18 at Myrtle Edwards Park just west of Seattle Center. We might not be there officially as House of Cannabis, but you can bet your best nugs a few of us will be there in our free time so if you see us, give us a shout, and be prepared for an instantaneous smoke session to commence. Peace and Love ya’ll.
Editors’ Note: Check out the video, below, for a little history in to what stopped Tacoma Hempfest, just 8 years ago this summer.
