Better Know a Stoner Song – “I Love You Mary Jane” by Sonic Youth and Cypress Hill

By the time the movie Judgement Night had come out, Sonic Youth were punk/grunge legends, and Cypress Hill had two bestselling albums, so this was very much collaboration effort teaming two towers of power. The Judgement Night soundtrack was unique in pairing up and coming rockers with groundbreaking hip-hop, rap, and fusion.

While this specific pairing is more of a remix of an existing Cypress Hill song over a blanket of guitar provided by Sonic Youth, the soundtrack was important for wide market acceptance of rap, and was a decent stepping stone for several musicians turning actor, such as Ice T.

If you are interested in more of this fusion project, I highly recommend the ONYX / Biohazard collab – but be forewarned – It’s aggressive. Also, the Pearl Jam & Cypress Hill hook-up is called “Real Thing”, and it’s pretty amazing, as well.
